Automating ITIL 4 Documentation Across Lab Repositories
As I progress through my WGU BSCSIA program, I’m constantly looking for ways to apply what I learn in practical, real-world scenarios. Today, I tackled a challenge that combined my ITIL 4 coursework with automation scripting: how to consistently apply professional service management documentation across multiple cybersecurity lab repositories.
The Challenge
My cybersecurity portfolio consists of individual GitHub repositories for each lab project:

While this architecture provides excellent project isolation and professional presentation, it created a documentation challenge: how do I consistently demonstrate ITIL 4 service management principles across all labs without manually updating each repository?
The ITIL 4 Connection
In my ITIL 4 studies, one principle stood out as directly applicable to this challenge: “Optimize and Automate.” Rather than manually copying and pasting professional documentation across repositories, I could create an automation system that embodies this very principle.
Building the Solution
1. Created a Comprehensive ITIL 4 Framework
Working with ChatGPT to analyze ITIL 4 principles in cybersecurity contexts, I built a complete ITIL 4 reference guide (frameworks/itil-4-cheat-sheet.md) that includes:
- All 7 ITIL 4 Guiding Principles with cybersecurity applications
- Service Value Chain mapped to security operations
- Key ITIL 4 Practices with lab implementation guidance
- Professional documentation templates
2. Developed Multi-Repository Automation
Using VS Code with GitHub Copilot assistance for code completion and error handling patterns, I developed the core automation script (github-itil-automation.py) that performs the following operations:
- Discovery: Identifies all lab repositories from a configured list
- Clone: Downloads each repository to a temporary workspace
- Enhancement: Adds professional ITIL 4 documentation to README files
- Integration: Commits changes with professional commit messages
- Deployment: Pushes updates back to GitHub
3. Professional Documentation Template
Each lab now receives a standardized ITIL 4 section:

I used ChatGPT for initial problem analysis and solution architecture, while GitHub Copilot in VS Code assisted with code completion and error handling patterns. This collaborative approach between human expertise and AI capabilities allowed me to:

What started as a documentation challenge became an opportunity to demonstrate the practical value of automation, service management principles, and modern AI-assisted development practices. The solution not only solved the immediate problem but created a scalable system that will serve my portfolio throughout my academic career and beyond.
The project perfectly embodies the ITIL 4 principle it implements: by optimizing and automating documentation processes, I’ve created more time to focus on actual lab work while ensuring consistent professional presentation across all projects.
This experience reinforced that the most effective approach combines:
